Equipment recyclability hub
Intro
The sailing industry is taking steps to improve the recyclability of its equipment. At the 2023 Allianz Sailing World Championships in Scheveningen, the first Equipment Recycling Hub was piloted. This initiative is a collaboration between World Sailing, World Sailing Trust, and Metstrade.
World Sailing’s Agenda 2030 requires that Olympic Class manufacturers’ non-reusable or nonrecyclable boat building waste does not exceed 20% of the boat hull’s finished weight by 2030. This is a challenging goal, but it is clear that there is a growing commitment to sustainability from all stakeholders in the sailing industry.
The Hub aims to raise awareness of the challenges and opportunities around recycling sailing equipment, and to brainstorm solutions together. Visitors to the upcoming Metstrade show will be able to see the items collected at the World Championships in the Equipment Recycling Hub in hall 12 and can share their ideas for recycling them.
Jo Aleh, a World Sailing Athletes Committee chair and competitor, supports the Equipment Recycling Hub initiative. She says athletes want manufacturers to reduce environmental impacts and better integrate sustainable technologies.
The Equipment Recycling Hub is a valuable opportunity for the sailing industry to come together and work towards a more sustainable future. By working together, we can make a real difference in reducing the environmental impact of this sport.
